Can we bring solar energy to Earth from space?
Imagine being able to use energy from the Sun all the time, even when it's night. That's the idea that scientists at the California Institute of Technology are exploring. They are working on collecting Sunlight in space and sending its energy to the earth. In space, the Sun shines all the time.
As a result, there is far more solar power in space than there is on Earth. Solar panel-equipped, energy-transmitting satellites collect high-intensity, uninterrupted solar radiation by using giant mirrors to reflect huge amounts of solar rays onto smaller solar collectors. This radiation is then wirelessly beamed to Earth in a safe, controlled way.
