The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people commemorating the alliance of France and the United States during the American Revolution. 

France presented the Statue of Liberty to the USA. It was designed by the French sculptor Friedrich Auguste Bartholdi. Its metal design was created by Gustav Eiffel. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue is a figure of Libertas. She holds a torch above her head with right hand, and in her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals), the date of U.S. Declaration of independence. This is the fact how USA got 'statue of Liberty'.
