Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to Become Second Indian to Travel to Space on Axiom Mission 4

Shubhanshu Shukla

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to make history as the second Indian to journey into space, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma's historic flight aboard the Soyuz T-11 in April 1984. Shukla will serve as the pilot on the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than spring 2025 from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, as confirmed by NASA on Thursday.

A Dual Role in Space Exploration

Group Captain Shukla, an officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF), has also been selected as an astronaut for India's ambitious Gaganyaan Mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was ISRO that facilitated his training and selection for the Ax-4 mission to the ISS, marking a significant collaboration between Indian and international space agencies.

Mission Leadership and Crew

The Ax-4 mission will be commanded by Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut and current director of human space flight at Axiom Space. Group Captain Shukla will take on the role of pilot, contributing his expertise to the mission's success. NASA officials highlighted the importance of this mission in advancing private space exploration and international cooperation.

Excitement Builds for the Mission

In an interview with NDTV, Group Captain Shukla expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming mission. "I am really excited to go into microgravity and experience space flight on my own. The tempo for the mission has been building up each month. I think we are at a stage wherein all the pieces are kind of coming together. I'm extremely excited," he said.

The Ax-4 mission represents a significant milestone for India's space program and highlights the growing role of private spaceflight in global space exploration. Group Captain Shukla's journey will not only inspire future generations of Indian astronauts but also strengthen international partnerships in the pursuit of scientific discovery beyond Earth.
